Sound Assets Providers for Game Developers

iPhone Tips WebGames

Being a two-man operation (soon to be 3!), I have to wear a lot of hats for our projects. One of my responsibility is sound design and editing. I recently just done this on our iPhone game, Rock Paper Laser and what I am doing with our current project Word Mansion. My tasks entails imagining the perfect sounds, comb through the local collection of free sound effect (10 Gbs!) and also from websites of sound providers, tweak the sounds (normalize, trim, change bitrates, etc), then test it inside the game – rinse and repeat. This job can be tedious but essential to making a polished product. Alternatively, if you have a couple hundred quid lying around you can outsource it to a professional studio and get a better result.

There are several sound providers fellow game developers will want to look at for high quality sound effects and music.

- a very popular marketplace for sound assets. It lets you buy sound assets directly from sound artists. Free 5 sound effects / month.

– a fairly new one (barely a year old) but with an already healthy selection with a sizeable  free sound section.

– Soundrangers has been around for a long time.  More expensive than the others but a good alternative nonetheless.

somatone – A high profile sound studio in the casual game space, they have recently opened up to Flash developers with these introductory prices.

  1. 5 SFX & 10 sec loop or sting – $200
  2. 8 SFX & 15 sec loop or sting – $350
  3. 10 SFX & 30 sec loop (or subdivide loop into one 20 sec loop & two 3-5 sec stings) – $500

– a very new one that focuses on music alone. They have a promo going;

$25 Off All Loop Sets

FlashGameLicense developers receive $25 off any loop set offered by Twune! Win sponsors hearts through their ears. Use this coupon code at checkout to receive the discount:FGLFTW

There are others but so far these are the ones that have decent websites and have reached out to indie or flash developers. Have fun sound hunting!
