Beta Testing Guidelines for iPhone Apps

iPhone Updates

RPL recently went into the beta testing phase. We have a very limited budget so we only have a mac mini, Unity license, and 2 ipod touch right now. We wanna make sure the apps runs fine on the iPhone. So we decided to solicit help from the community for testing on actual iPhones. 3 kind volunteers agreed and they sent in their udids and the RPL betas are now in their inbox.

Beta testing is a is not as simple as it looks. So I sent them guidelines, along with the thank you note and installation instructions. I will share what i sent them, feel free to criticize, give suggestion, etc so that we may improve it. We will regularly beta test our apps and web games in the future so this will definitely be reused.

Welcome!

First of all, thank you for taking the time to help us beta test our product. Beta testing is an important part of attaining a smooth, stable and polished product so we truly value your contribution. Here are a few guidelines to make every feedback we get be in proper context and usable.

Please note that these are not required but suggestions only.

General Testing

  • Give feedback on the icon and the name of the product.
  • Take note of the emotional response during the 1st usage of the product
  • Take time to know the product first and how quickly you understood it.
  • Please try the product in your natural environment
    • Alone and focusing on the product
    • In an idle moment (waiting for something)
    • With friends
    • Take note of anything that takes too long (or has you waiting too long) for your taste.
    • Proceed to technical after using the product naturally a couple or more times.

Technical Testing

  • Try to tap on every button, menu and submenu
  • If a crash occurs, retrace the actions leading up to the crash
  • Check for performance issues
  • Also check for sound related bugs

Have fun with our product and e-mail your findings, negative or positive feedback, recommendations and reactions to contact[at]cavalcadegames[dot]com. Once again, thank you and we hope for your support when we release the final product.

I think we will get feedback after a day or three. If all goes well, then we submit to Apple.

You must have fairly technical beta testers. I’ve had to explain the horrible process of getting the app onto their device (unzip the app, saving the .mobileprovision, drag on itunes, find the apps tab, make sure new app is selected, sync apps, make sure you aren’t running the old version, etc. etc.)

How is this working so far? I’m looking at different services for testing, and also crowd-sourcing. It would be great if you could do a follow up blog.
